The Church That Could Not Be Silent | Acts 4:13–20 | August 23, 2026
Love. Build. Reach.
Sermon by Rev. Larry Davis | Second Baptist Church Amarillo, TX
The early church faced pressure to stop speaking about Jesus, but conviction would not allow silence.
In Acts 4, Peter and John stood before religious leaders who commanded them not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. Their response was clear. Obedience to God mattered more than the approval of men.
For we cannot but speak the things that we have seen and heard.
Acts 4:20 NKJV
This passage shows us the pressure to be silent, the priority of obedience, and the power of testimony.
The disciples were not speaking from theory. They were speaking from personal experience. They had seen the power of Christ. They had heard His teaching. They had witnessed His resurrection. What God had done in their lives had become a testimony they could not keep to themselves.
The same calling remains for the church today.
There will always be pressure to remain quiet, blend in, or avoid difficult conversations about faith. But the Gospel was never meant to stay inside the walls of the church.
We are called to speak with courage, live with conviction, and faithfully tell others what Jesus has done.
A church that truly knows Christ cannot be silent about Christ.
Love God.
Build His people.
Reach the world.
