The Past and the Pardon | Genesis 50:15–21 | July 26, 2026
From the Pit to the Palace
The Journey of Joseph
Sermon by Rev. Larry Davis | Second Baptist Church Amarillo, TX
The past has a way of following us.
For Joseph’s brothers, years had passed since they betrayed him, sold him, and caused deep pain within their family. Yet when their father died, the fear of what they had done returned. They wondered whether Joseph had truly forgiven them or whether judgment was finally coming.
Their past still carried pressure.
Joseph, however, had learned to see his story through the perspective of God’s providence.
But as for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.
Genesis 50:20a NKJV
Joseph did not pretend that what his brothers had done was acceptable. He called it evil. But he also understood that their evil actions had never been greater than God’s sovereign purpose.
This passage shows us the pressure of the past, the perspective of providence, and the promise of pardon.
Joseph had every human reason to seek revenge, yet he chose mercy.
He reassured his brothers, promised to provide for them and their children, and spoke kindly to them.
Forgiveness does not change what happened. It changes what we allow the past to control.
Joseph’s story reminds us that God can redeem what others intended for harm. Pain does not have to produce bitterness. Betrayal does not have to become the final word. God is able to work through even the darkest chapters of our lives and bring purpose from what once brought pain.
The past may explain part of our story, but it does not have to control our future.
God’s providence gives us perspective, and His grace teaches us how to extend pardon.
Join us as we continue learning from Joseph’s journey and discovering what it means to trust God with the wounds, memories, and relationships we cannot change on our own.
